How did people change the government?
The Haitian government was completely altered due to the Haitian Revolution. Although the United States did not recognize Haitian independence until 1862, they were granted it in 1804. Without this revolution, the slaves would never have been free, and the social classes in St. Domingue would have lived on. In order to reach the goal of Haitian Independence, the people of St. Domingue did have to fight in rebel. They destroyed plantations, killed French men, and did not budge in their beliefs of freedom for all. Even after their powerful leader died, they continued to fight to change how their government operated, with just the whites in charge. Due to the way they handled it the new country had a shaky start. The war had caused their land to be demolished and their was still civil unrest between different races. Although the slaves had won freedom and rights, they still did not have much say they wanted in the government.
